GROUNDBREAKING: Premier League introduces safe standing regulation

There were trials done the previous season, but now every club has been given the greenlight

Pretty much every football fan will tell you that one of the best things about the sport is jumping around, singing and cheering with your friends and family as your team take on their rivals. However, for Premier League fans that seems like a thing of the past... until now.

As part of the new regulations brought in after the Hillsborough Disaster and the Taylor Report, all top stadiums in England became all-seaters, with each ticket corresponding with one of said seats, where fans must remain seated throughout the duration of the match.

While some room for celebration, singing and dancing has remained, the result of the measures have made top tier English football a much more sanitized experience, which is one of the reasons some fans have instead turned to support local clubs at lower levels of the football pyramid, where many of the same restrictions don't apply.

However, it seems after nearly thirty years, standing may return to the Premier League and EFL Championship, as both leagues have announced that they will allow the introduction of "safe standing" areas in their stadiums for the 2022-23 season.

Safe standing is a design that allows for fans to watch the matches standing without the dangers of overcrowding and crushes, as barriers prevent fans rushing and falling on top of one another. These kind of arrangements have been used most famously in Germany's Bundesliga for a long time, and now they could be arriving to England.
