DRAMATIC: Boca Juniors claims title in INCREDIBLE fashion

The Argentine giants added another title to their trophy cabinet, but now without suspense

Lunes 24 Oct 2022

Boca Juniors is the 2022 Liga Profesional Argentina champions. The side led by Hugo Ibarra won the title in dramatic fashion, after arriving to the last game as league leaders, but still needing to see it through in a tricky game. The Xeneize's didn't quite do their part and they had wait until the last minute to shout "CAMPEON!".

Coming to the 27th and last match day of the Liga Profesional Argentina, we found league leaders Boca Juniors with 51 points, closely followed by Racing Club who had 50. Things intensified even further as both faced each other's derby rivals, with Boca facing Independiente while Racing hosted River Plate, a set of fixtures that had everyone debating over the week.

Depending on each others results, different things could happen. A Boca Juniors win gave them the title regardless of what happened in the other game, but a draw for el Xeneize mean that a Racing win could give them the title. If Boca lost, a Racing draw would've set up a title decider down the road. Of course, a Racing loss meant regardless of what happened in the other game, Boca Juniors would be champions. With both games starting at the same time, things were closely matched.

Things started better for Racing Club actually, with a 32 minute penalty to Independiente, which was scored by Leandro Fernandez, but Boca quickly got the goal back. With no goals at Racing, it mean that things went to half time as they had started.

Boca Juniors got ahead early in the second half, with a Sebastian Villa goal to make it 2-1, while Racing scored a penalty just six minutes later to take the lead in their game. Things kept like that for a while, until in the 80th minute River Plate got one back through Colombian Miguel Borja. Expect at that precise minute, Independiente got level with a Javier Vallejo header.

With 10 minutes to go, all Racing needed was a goal to be crowned champions. That opportunity came in the dying embers of the game, when they got another penalty. With the title on the line, it was Jonathan Galván who stepped forward to take the responsibility. A very soft penalty to the centre of the goal meant River Plate goalkeeper Franco Armani could easily parry and then the rebound got sent over the crossbar. Racing simply lost their spirit at that moment, and they even conceded a second in the 95th minute goal, again by Miguel Borja, to destroy any title hopes

It brings another league title to Boca Juniors, who have won five of the last seven, and wraps an epic campaign for new coach Hugo Ibarra, who was constantly critizised for his playing style, but now brings another star to the blue and gold team.
