Manchester United fans and staff must be thrilled. After suffering disappointment after disappointment, they've finally closed one of the biggest signings of the summer, taking world-class midfielder Casemiro to Old Trafford for £70 million. But some have been very critical of the move, and they're not keeping quiet.

While a few have criticized what it means for Casemiro, pointing out there are few arguments on the sporting side to make the move, others are going after what it will do for Manchester United. Among those we can find Liverpool legend Graeme Souness. The Scotsman has become known for voicing controversial opinions, and this time it's not different.

"He was playing with great players. He's not a great player. He has never been a great player", Souness told UK radio talkSPORT. "I see him as a steady Eddie who will make United be more solid in midfield. I don't think he has got a great range of passing. I don't think he is going help other people play. The Real Madrid team, the midfield especially, was full of footballing players".

Souness is far from the first to comment on the fact that the Brazilian seems like a departure from the Red Devils' initial targets for the position, with the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Adrien Rabiot offering much more of a creative and tecnically gifted outlet much more suited to manager Erik ten Hag's style of play, but he also went after the deal as a whole.

"He is 30 years old and its £70m. Too much money", added the former Liverpool captain, "It is Manchester United all over again. Manchester United will pay a premium because it is Manchester United and the Premier League and people know its awash with money. But I don't see him making them any better when they have the ball".

It remains to be seen what Casemiro adds to a Manchester United midfield that has been lacking for seasons now, and whether Graeme Souness is correct in his assesment. In total, Casemiro won 18 titles during his time at Real Madrid, including five Champions Leagues, three La Liga championships, three Club World Cups, three European Super Cups, one Copa del Rey, and three Spanish Super Cups.
