"They treat him like a PIECE OF MEAT": Ex player blasts Barça over De Jong

Voices are gathering against Barcelona as their treatment of young star Frenkie de Jong looks worse and worse

FC Barcelona have put Frenkie de Jong against the wall. Following the Dutchman's failed move to Manchester United, and with the club pushing him to lower his wages or take a move (potentially to Chelsea), it's not been a good start to the season for a player who once branded the Blaugranas as his "dream club".

Therefore, many on the footballing world are starting to feel like such treatment is not fair and are criticising the club for the way in which they're conducting their business. First, it was AC Milan and Netherlands legend Marco van Basten who said that "Johan Cruyff would have been ashamed to see how Barça behaved today", and now other voices join the claims, incluiding that of former Barcelona player Gary Lineker.

The Englishman, who played for Barcelona between 1986 and 1989, voiced his distaste for the treatment De Jong is receiving. "‘I feel for Frenkie a bit. He's been treated a bit like a piece of meat in the whole thing for circumstances totally out of his control", claimed Lineker.

"He's a gifted young player and it's very important for him he doesn't go somewhere he doesn't want to go", explained the former footballer, while also acknowledging that it's also up to De Jong to solve the situation as he wants, "He has the playing cards in his hand in that sense. He will have to be quite strong. It is so weird".

This situation comes about as Barcelona need to clear wages to continue reinforcing their team. The Catalan giants have been able to register many of their latest signings thanks to the deals that were put in place to sell stakes at the companies owned by the club, but a heavy wages reestructuring continues to be one of the priorities of the Joan Laporta presidency, while even threatening legal action against De Jong over the contract he signed with the previous administration.

All while at the same time, the higher ups at the club and the coach Xavi Hernández insist they want to keep Frenkie de Jong, something Gary Lineker duly noted: "Barcelona seemingly want him but something has to give and it just seems a shame for it to end up like this".
