SHOCKING: Barcelona THREATEN LEGAL ACTION against De Jong

The Catalan club need to clear wages, and they're going to do it, whatever it takes

Barcelona have just brought out the cannons against one of their own players, Frenkie de Jong. The Catalan giants are in trouble, as LaLiga is refusing to allow them to register the signings the have done during this transfer window, arguementing that they cannot show the necessary income to meet the wage cap. Extreme times call for extreme measures, and so have Barça done.

Now, as reported by The Athletic's David Ornestein, Frenkie de Jong has been informed by Barcelona that they intend to terminate his current contract and reinstate the terms he was previously under. They believe the conditions set forth by the club's previous board were unlawful and give rise to grounds for legal action against those responsible.

The Catalan giants reportedly explained this to De Jong a few months back and claimed to have discovered proof of illegal activity on behalf of the parties that signed his extension on October 20, 2020. De Jong signed this deal with Bartomeu's board, by which the Dutch player extended his contract with Barcelona until 2026 in exchange for lowering his salary for the 2020 -21 and 2021-22 seasons.

This is a highly controversial move and one that has raised eyebrows along the footballing world. Evgeni Levchenko, president of the Vereniging van Contractspelers (the professional footballers union in The Netherlands) explained it could be considered "extortion" and is being monitored by the world players' union, FIFPRO.

On the other hand, many are suspicious of the timing of this warning. The letter reached De Jong's lawyers on July 15, curiously one day after the Dutch midfielder refused the first offer that Barça put in front of him to go to Manchester United, which makes it look less like a real legal concern and more like a threat.

For their part, the members of the Bartomeu administration have defended the legality of the contract and argue that this contract was validated by the board of directors, the economic commission, the compliance and the auditors of the previous board. They also point out that the Laporta board found no issue with this upon taking over the admistration of the club, but rather do now, when they need to clear De Jong's wages.
