He's one of the club's best players in their history and he's returning as a manager, but it's less of a fairy tale and more of a surprise. Very few English manager's take their trade abroad, but Wayne Rooney will be doing so, although his next destination isn't all that usual, the MLS.

Rooney's career as a manager has been bittersweet so far. An iconic first season with Derby, stepping up from a role as a player to save them from relegation in 2020-21 was then followed by a difficult second season, as the club was dealing with a points deduction that reached 21 points after entering administration, then admitting to breaching EFL accounting rules, and pretty much guaranteeing their relegation.

However, that first season saw him as an outsider to the Celtic job, a sign of having done a good job, and now Rooney will be moving to the MLS, joining the club he once played for, the DC United. "DC United announced today that Wayne Rooney has been named as the club's new head coach", the Major League Soccer club said in a statement.

The former English international will be taking over as soon as the work visa paperwork is done, replacing interim coach Chad Ashton, who took the reigns over the departing Hernan Losada in April. DC United are second from bottom in the Eastern Conference, having earned just 17 points from a 51 possible.

"Wayne is a soccer legend and one of the most exciting and dynamic up-and-coming managers in our sport. He's already proven in his young coaching career that he knows how to lead a group through adversity", said Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan, co-chairmen of D.C. United.

"He has an understanding of our league and what it takes to be successful in Major League Soccer thanks to his two-year stay with us as a player. The passion he showed while wearing Black-and-Red electrified our city and our club and we are so excited to welcome him back as our head coach".
