Manchester United needed something to celebrate after their torrid start to the season, both on sporting and transfer market terms. That something was their great win against Liverpool in another clash with their greatest rivals, but the victory also left some things to take away, particuarly about the difference in attitude between their first league matches and the last one.

One to make such comments was new signing Christian Eriksen, who commended his teammates for playing with increased intensity. "I think it [the togetherness] started after losing two games", the Danish midfielder told to the clubs official media, "This has been about coming together and getting back to the basics. We needed to show that we were better doing the basics and I think we did that today".

However, some of his comments sounded a bit off, particularly considering those who did not take part in the match, like club captain Harry Maguire and wantaway star Cristiano Ronaldo. "We have some very quick players and how we played today, and how Liverpool play, suited us as well. It's great to play with players who want to play football and run", said Eriksen.

In preparation for United's crucial match against Liverpool, mananger Erik ten Hag benched four players, with Scott McTominay taking the place of Fred, and Luke Shaw dropping for Tyrell Malacia, as well as the aforementioned stars. Before the game, Ten Hag made a suggestion that he might bench Maguire in favour of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as his center-back pairing.
