COACH KEV: Manchester City star De Bruyne completes coaching badges

The Belgian took one of UEFA's highest courses and could now look into a future in the dugout

There are players that, because of how they move on the pitch, you always suspect they will go on to have a coaching career. While top players not always make brilliant coaches, and not every brilliant coach has a past as a top player, sometimes you can predict it. It was the case with Pep Guardiola, as it was with Johan Cruyff or Carlo Ancelotti.

Now, it seems we may be looking to add a name to that list as perhaps the next best coach in the world is taking shape, even if he still wears a Sky Blue shirt most weekends. Manchester City star Kevin de Bruyne just completed his UEFA A license, meaning he now could, if the chose to, work as one of the City youth choaches or sit next to Guardiola as his assistant.

In fact, it would seem that Guardiola himself had a big impact in De Bruyne's choice to get his coaching badges. In 2021 he said while talking to UK newspaper The Mirror: "When you have worked with a man like [Pep] Guardiola, you look at this sport in a totally different way. For the sake of football in my home country Belgium, it would be good to pass on all that knowledge".

De Bruyne is doubtlessly one of the best players in the world right now. Being in contention to pick up the PFA Player of the Year award for a third successive season, it's clear that there will be a lot more to come from the Belgian before he sits in the benches. Guardiola himself was very positive about him a few months ago: "He has something unique in the world. We know it. Kevin is an exceptional player".

However, it wasn't just De Bruyne who picked up his licence, as a number of Belgium players did so as well, encouraged by Belgium National Team manager Roberto Martinez to seek coaching education, among them Jan Vertonghen, Youri Tielemans, Leandro Trossard, Simon Mignolet, Axel Witsel and Thomas Vermaelen.
