Chelsea is DESPERATE and could pay a FORTUNE for their next signing

The Blues missed on Koundé and they need a central defender very soon, but they could end up paying an absolute fortune for their next target

Chelsea FC are in a problem. Having lost two of their best centrebacks in Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, they're scrambling to replace them. They've been linked with Jules Koundé, Nathan Ake and even Matthjis de Ligt, but so far they've only managed to sign Kalidou Koulibaly. Blues manager Thomas Tuchel isn't happy and the clock is ticking, so extreme measures could be needed to make sure they don't miss their latest target: Leicester City's Wesley Fofana.

The 21 year old Frenchman has been an ever-developing force in the Premier League, impressing with his performances with the Foxes as he was an instant starter following a recovery from a fibula fracture that took him out of contention for 41 games during last season.

Fofana is a brilliant next-gen centreback, combining strong defensive tackling and interceptions with the capacity to bring the ball out of the back. That makes him the ideal Thomas Tuchel centreback, but Chelsea will have to pay a record-breaking fee if they want him to switch to their shade of blue for the coming season.

That's because Fofana has recently signed a new contract, extending his stint with the Foxes until 2027. This puts Leicester City in an ideal bargaining position, and according to UK newspaper The Guardian, the 2015-16 Premier League champions are asking for £85 million for the Frenchman.

That would make Wesley Fofana the most expensive centreback of all time, overcoming the record set by Liverpool in 2018 when they signed Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton for £75 million. While Chelsea will clearly try to avoid this situation, truth is they're running out of time and options.
