Chelsea's RECORD summer: The Blues set to spend a HISTORIC fee

Boss Thomas Tuchel demanded for signings and owner Todd Boehly has granted his every wish

Miércoles 31 Ago 2022

Chelsea are having no trouble shelling out whatever it takes to satisfy the whims of German manager Thomas Tuchel. The coach demanded signings a few weeks ago and the higher ups at the club want to fulfill his wish, so they are paying exorbitant figures to achieve it.

Now, with the arrival of three targets to reinforce the defence, the Blues could spend a record figure for three central defenders, with Kalidou Koulibaly's move now complemented by Wesley Fofana's switch from Leicester CIty and the reports of interest in Croatian Josko Gvardiol with talks well advanced at a prohibitive cost.

Usually the area of the pitch in which the clubs invest the most is up front; goals have a special price on the market and goalscorers come at a premium, but this time it's been different for Chelsea. After the departures of the likes of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger, the Blues needed help at the back.

Kalidou Koulibaly was the first of the three signings to wear Chelsea blue. The Senegalese left Napoli for £34 million and signed with the Blues until 2027. In the first games of the season he's been the defensive leader of a Chelsea squad that did not start the season in the best way, so he will have to look for his team to pick up the slack in the final third to justify the £15 million that he will receive annually.

Made official just hours ago, Wesley Fofana has also become a Chelsea player. With only 52 appearances with the Leicester first team following a serious injury last season, the 21-year-old footballer will arrive in London for £74 million, set to make £10 million a year, and will become the third most expensive defender in history, just behind Manchester United's Harry Maguire and Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk.

But this record will probably only last for a couple of days, as the London club already have their next target in sight. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea would be close to closing an agreement with RB Leizpig for Josko Gvardiol. The 20-year-old defender would put the Blues back some 90 million euros (£77 million). In any case, the English team would have to wait until June 2023 for the Croatian to be available for Tuchel.

If Romano gets it right, as he often does with his scoops, Chelsea and Thomas Tuchel would close out a historic transfer market by spending a combined £185 million on three central defenders: Kalidou Koulibaly (for £34m), Wesley Fofana (for £74m) and Josko Gvardiol (for £77m).
