Cristiano Ronaldo has had a tough week at Manchester United. During the Red Devils' key win against Tottenham, he left the stadium after refusing to come in as a substitute. While he's faced a storm of criticism since, former teammate Nani attempted to defend his behaviour by offering an odd justification.

Ronaldo made the rift between himself and United manager Erik ten Hag even wider with his decision to leave the pitch; the Portuguese was fined for his behaviour, and ten Hag split him from the squad, meaning he'll miss their upcoming Premier League game against Chelsea. Although the athlete has already expressed regret for his attitude, some still try to make excuses.

Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha, better known as Nani, is a Portuguese winger who played for Manchester United between 2007 and 2015. Currently part of Australian side Melbourne Victory FC, he was asked about the incident, but the former Portugal international made an incredible excuse for his teammate.

"I didn't see it, so I don't know... maybe he had to go to the bathroom?", replied Nani, clearly showing his loyalty for his former teammate. "Everyone knows that he is a professional, a great professional. He works very hard to be in the field. Maybe it's probably a bit of frustration at not being an option to play. But that is his wish, to be in the field and play", insisted the former United and Sporting player. Goes to show all you really need in this world is a good friend to back you up.
