The expectations are very high and Lionel Messi knows it. The Argentine National Team arrives as one of the favorites for the 2022 Qatar World Cup and the goal is for Messi to lift the trophy. However, the forward himself has now added one more caveat: this will be his last chance to touch the World Cup.

In an interview with Latinamerican streaming service Star+, the star of Paris Saint Germain admitted that the World Cup in Qatar will be his last appearance in a event of that type. "I don't know if we are the great candidates, but Argentina is always a candidate because of history, because of what it means. More so now because of how we arrive [at the tournament]. But we are not the top favorites, it seems to me. There are other teams that are above of us today, but we are very close", explained Messi.

However, when asked if Qatar 2022 will be his last World Cup, the number 10 answered without hesitation: "Yes, surely yes". "I am counting down the days for the World Cup. There is a bit of anxiety and nerves at the same time. Wanting it to be now and the nerves that we are already there, what is going to happen. when it arrives and on the other is the fear of wanting things to go well for us", he added.

Argentina is in Group C, and will face Saudi Arabia (Tuesday, November 22), Mexico (Saturday, November 26) and Poland (Wednesday, November 30). "We arrive on a good mood, because of how everything happened. With a very consolidated group, very strong. After that, in a World Cup anything can happen. All the games are very difficult. That is why the World Cup is so difficult and special, not always the favorites are always the ones who end up winning or going the way you expected", Messi added.

Finally, the Argentine crack remarked: "I feel good physically, I was able to do a very good preseason this year that I had not done the previous year, because of how it happened I started training late, playing a couple of dates later, without rhythm. Then I went to the National Team, when I came back I had an injury in the middle. I never finished starting. This summer's preseason was fundamental to start in a different way. I arrived with a different head, another mentality and a lot of enthusiasm". The reality is that the hope of many Argentines is that Lionel Messi can play in the 2026 World Cup, but after his words it seems it will be very hard.
