Matthijs de Ligt was one of the most promising players of the Ajax generation that shook the world during 2019, reaching the semifinals of the Champions League. Hakim Ziyech, Frenkie de Jong and Donny de Beek were among the stars of the team, and they all got a move away from the Amsterdam club, but De Ligt was one of the most intriguing.

Just 19 years old at the time and captaining the side, he looked to have the makings of a the next great Dutch centreback, following the line of Ronald Koeman, Ronald de Boer, Jaap Stam or Virgil Van Dijk. However, his move to Juventus after that Champions League run has been irregular.

De Ligt failed to make the desired impact at la Vecchia Signora, with questions coming up about his mentality and readines for the position. Now, with his contract coming up in 2024, renewal talks have failed and reports are suggesting the player has asked for a transfer.

According to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, De Ligt was unhappy with the potential 98 million euros release clause Juve wanted to add to his contract, and has requested to leave the club this summer.

This opens a huge window of opportunity for any club looking for a top centreback, as despite dissappointing at Juventus, the Dutch player is still just 22 years old, and has shown before what he can do in a comfortable environment.

That's exactly what Manchester United feel they could offer, with former Ajax manager Erik Ten Hag, who would make  De Ligt the key piece of their revamped defence. In fact, the Dutch centreback has praised the new Manchester United manager lately, saying "He has a lot of qualities [to succeed]. We will have to see how he goes [at United]. He definitely improves players. He wants to do everything to make his team play better".
