Arsenal went from one of the quietest clubs in the transfer market, to one of the most active. Having announced the signing of Brazilian youngster Marquinhos and then of Porto's Fabio Vieira, they have allegedly closed down that of Manchester City's Gabriel Jesus and are now going for another South American: Lisandro Martinez.

At least, that's what journalist Mike Verweij from Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf is reporting, as Arsenal are said to be chasing the Argentine. Martínez, who has been playing for Ajax since joining in 2019, has been excellent for the Amsterdam club and has gathered interest from several top European clubs.

Chief among that list seems to be Arsenal, and now De Telegraaf is reporting that the North London club has made an offer worth 40 million euros for Martinez. According to the Dutch newspaper, this would be an increase from the 25 million Arsenal had offered before, although Ajax are still hesitant to accept the deal, as they would rather not lose Martinez just yet.

Martínez, who has stablished himself as one of the top options for Argentina National Team coach Lionel Scaloni, came through the Newell's Old Boys' academy like other Argentine great centrebacks like Walter Samuel or Gabriel Heinze. However, his best stint in the Argentine league was with Defensa y Justicia.
