The issue of racism in Spanish football continues to be a hot topic, and the last to speak on the matter was Iñaki Williams. The issue burst into public attention after the chants and insults suffered by Vinicius Junior during the Madrid derby, and now the Athletic Bilbao forward spoke on the matter.

Williams, who was born in Bilbao to Ghanian parents, has dealt with racism all his life and is an authorized voice to speak about it. In fact, it wasn't that long ago that he suffered racial abuse at the hands of Espanyol fans recently.  Speaking to Spanish radio Cadena SER, he expressed his support for Vinicius and discussed some of the effects racism has beyond the most obvious.

"I heard it and I thought it was regrettable", pointed out Williams. "Not just for Vinicius or for what happened to me, we are the visible mirror for many people, but racism, for these ‘invisible' people that might suffer from it on a daily basis, it affects them more".

In Williams mind, racism also harms those for whom sports should be a guide and a model: "We should be an example for people and the children who grow up watching television".

"The sanctions should make an example of them so that acts like these do not happen again", insisted the Athletic Bilbao forward, "Between all of us we can make it so that the beautiful part of football is going to a stadium and supporting a team. Between all of us, we can end this scourge".
