UNEXPECTED: This Real Madrid midfielder could leave the club soon

If there's one thing that has allowed Real Madrid in the last decade become so dominant and collect trophies at an unrivalled pace, it has been stability. The new Galacticos era, particularly from the first Carlo Ancelloti era, has been all about stability. Same players, same tactics, same habits, winning. However, one of those players could soon throw an unexpected wrench at the machinery, Toni Kroos.

The reason is that, according to Spanish newspaper AS, Kroos could soon be departing Real Madrid. The German international was (and remains, for now) part of an all-conquering midfield trio, with Croatian playmaker Luka Modric and Brazilian holding midfielder Casemiro. However, that partnership could be broken in the not-so-distant future.

While there have been signs of renovation all across the Merengue squad, with the additions of Eduardo Camavinga and now Aurélien Tchouaméni, as well as Federico Valverde, the plan so far seemed to be to keep the original trio together for as long as possible and the renovation of Luka Modric shows.

However, reports are now coming that  Toni Kroos has refused to renew his contract at Real Madrid, and would (for now) leave at the end of the 2022-23 season. This decision has come as a surprise to the Real Madrid directors, but it comes for a good reason.

According to AS, the reasoning from Kroos is that he wants to see how the coming season develops and how his body holds together, since he doesn't want to become a "burden to future planning" for the club. As far as it has been reported, Real Madrid is understading of the situation and respect the player's desires. It remains, nonetheless, that this could his last season playing at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Toni Kroos joined Real Madrid in 2014 from Bayern Munich for the measly figure (even back then) of 25 million euros. Since then, he has played 364 matches for Los Blancos, scoring 25 goals and providing 83 assists.
