Manchester United thought they were making the definitive appointment when they sealed the deal to make then-Ajax boss Erik ten Hag their fifth manager since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013. However, according to former Premier League forward Joe Cole, they could have made a much better signing if they had just waited a bit.

The former England and Chelsea player thinks that in fact Thomas Tuchel would have been the best candidate for the post at Old Trafford and that the Red Devils will be "kicking themselves" now that the German was let go just months after they hired Erik ten Hag. With Graham Potter appointed as Blues manager shortly after Tuchel was fired, the former Mainz and Borussia Dortmund boss is unemployed and according to Cole he was the ideal Manchester United manager.

"I'm happy to say I think it was the wrong decision to get rid of Thomas Tuchel", said Cole in a recent interview with YouTube channel FIVE. "He connected to the Chelsea fans and he won trophies. He was in a difficult period, that's for sure, but getting rid of him was harsh. How was it handled? There's no good way to get rid of a manger but I think the decision was wrong and they could have stuck with him".

However, according to Cole one club's loss could've been another club's gain if only United would've hold their horses on the Ten Hag deal: "I tell you who will be kicking themselves a little bit: Manchester United. I bet they wish this happened three or four months ago".

"I don't know how the Ten Hag era will go - it's looking promising at the moment", added Cole, "but Thomas Tuchel is exactly what Manchester United need. He's the type of character who can galvanize a group. I think he's different gear".

Prior to Erik ten Hag's eventual appointment, United had been interested in luring the German away from the Stamford Bridge. However, they were unsuccessful in their attempts fairly early on and instead moved for the Dutchman. Now it looks like we'll have to wait to see if the Thomas Tuchel/Manchester United duo would have been the match made in heaven that Joe Cole believes.
