Cristiano Ronaldo isn't happy, and nobody knows it better than Erik Ten Hag. In the wake of United's 6-3 defeat at the Etihad on Sunday, the Dutch coach claimed that he had resisted the urge to bring Ronaldo on as  a substitute out of respect for the player's career, but that's hardly going to make it better for the Portuguese star.

Ronaldo is anticipated to play during Manchester United's Europa League group match in Cyprus versus Omonia Nicosia, but the context has increased rumours that he would quit Old Trafford in January, and Ten Hag knows this.

"He's not happy that he wasn't playing Sunday, but that wasn't the question. The question was about his mood when he's around and if he's happy. Of course, he wants to play, he's p*ssed off when he's not playing", commented the Dutchman.

"He's not coming when we're 4-0, 5-1, 6-1 down, I didn't bring him out of respect", added the United manager, who has been dealing with the issues surrounding the Portugal star's future since the very early days of his Old Trafford tenure, "It's nothing to do with what's happening for the future or January or next year".

However, Erik ten Hag insist that Cristiano Ronaldo is perfoming well during training and that he's happy with the former Real Madrid man's work: "I don't see he's unhappy. He's happy, he's training well, he's enjoying it. Everyone is training well, there's a good spirit, that's not the point, it's important as it's a base to work well. [Cristiano] is really competitive, as we all know. He's not happy when he's not playing".
