"The road traveled was long. It makes me feel A lot of pride. We live beautiful things and others not so much. We always look forward. We never give up, we work with sacrifice", this was the way that Marcelo Gallardo chose to bring an end to his stint at River Plate. The historic manager will leave the club with 14 titles, including two Copa Libertadores.

While the day that no River fan wanted to arrive has finally come, now the club must face the difficult task of finding a replacement. It's not easy task; varied names like experienced coaches like Marcelo Bielsa, Ricardo Gareca and Ramon Diaz come as possibilties, while other, fresher faces also are in line like Pablo Aimar or recently retired Leonardo Ponzio.

However, one name is rising above all for now, and that is Martín Demichelis. The former Argentine international, who played for River Plate and Bayern Munich among others, is the top candidate to replace Gallardo. He has a good relationship with the club's hierarchy and they believe he is the right kind of appointment

Demichelis is currently working for Bayern Munich's academy and it is not the first time that he's talked about as a potential like a replacement for the River Plate manager. When asked on the matter not that long ago, Demichelis was clear that he would take the chance, but only if Gallardo wasn't available: "Regarding if I would agree to be the manager of River, you have to leave Gallardo who I always say is best in the club's history.  Of course I dream of coaching River sometime and also in the clubs that I played".

Martin Demichelis played just 17 games with River Plate between 2002 and 2003 before leaving for Bayern Munich aged 22

River Plate will need some time to recover from the  blow of Marcelo Gallardo's farewell, but while the World Cup gets going, the club will be smart to start working on finding his replacement, and everything makes it look like it will be Martín Demichelis.
