PSG signed him for 40 million: now he goes on loan to Benfica
He was one of their biggest signings when he arrived, but now he's been overshadowed by the likes of Messi, Neymar and Mbappe
In 2016, Paris Saint Germain spent 40 million euros to sign Julian Draxler, who was the one of the Bundesliga's star playing for Wolfsburg. In the first seasons, the German was an important member of the squad, but as time went by, Draxler started to lose his position against all the stars that PSG signed. That's why he now has decided to leave.
In a quick operation, Draxler will move to Benfica on a one-year loan as he has a contract until 2024 with the Parisian outfit. The 28-year-old midfielder is already in Lisbon and PSG will take over a significant part of his 7 million euros a year salary.
For Benfica it is a tremendous signing, which can be approached thanks to the big financial backing secured after selling Darwin Núñez for 100 million euros to Liverpool. However, one fun fact that may be overlooked about Draxler's move is that after joining Benfica, he will face Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League group stage.
In the last hours, Draxler reportedly received calls from Valencia, who just sold Carlos Soler to Paris Saint Germain, but his negotiation with Benfica was already well advanced. During last season, Draxler played just 24 games, most of them as a substitute and only scored two goals and provided two assists.
In the next few hours, Julian Draxler will undergo a medical review and the move will be made official. It is expected that next Thursday he will join Benfica's training sessions and begin to pick up his football rhythm to be available to the Portuguese team.
