Neymar's career has had many ups and downs in recent years, both at club level and with his Brazil National Team. However, the criticism that Neymar has received in his country has been very harsh and this would be leading the footballer to take the decision to retire from the Canarinha after playing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. "I cannot guarantee that I will play another World Cup. I honestly don't know. But I want to play like if this were my last World Cup", assured Neymar in an interview with Brazilian media.

Neymar is currently 30 years old and would be just 34 by the time the 2026 World Cup comes, but the Brazilian has been tempted to leave the National Team for a while. Last October the former Santos man warned: "I think Qatar will be my last World Cup. I don't know if I have the mental strength to continue dealing with football".

At the moment, Neymar played two World Cups: Brazil 2014, where he was injured by Camilo Zúñiga in the quarterfinals and could not continue playing, while in Russia 2018 he saw Brazil go out eliminated against Belgium in the same stage.

At the time, Neymar took aim at the people in Brazil, because of the criticism: "It's very sad to have this feeling that when the Brazilian team plays it's not important. When I was a fan, when I was a kid, the National Team match was quite an event. You had to prepare, meet your whole family, you put on the Brazilian shirt, the Brazilian flags were placed in the window. There was the asado, the cake, all at home. It was an event. And today it no longer has that importance. I don't know why. I don't know how we got to that state."

"I hope that all this will change, that the Brazilian fan will once again support the Brazilian National Team, to be together and look for the World Cup, which is what everyone wants," Neymar said in that interview. Perhaps now with the addition that it may be his last World Cup, the Brazil National Team will have a more genuine and more intense support as the player himself requested at the time.
