Lionel Messi's return to Barcelona is closer than ever. The Argentine has had a flying season so far for Paris Saint Germain, after a hesitant debut campaign for the French outfit. The club is thrilled with the Argentine, but it's looking increasingly like it'll be the last they see of him, as a return to the Catalan giants could be happening, according to Barça vice president Eduard Romeu.

Things are going well for Messi at Paris this season. He's on four goals and seven assists in eight Ligue 1 matches so far, and he's looking as sharp as ever with the Qatar 2022 World Cup closer and closer on the horizon. That's why club advisor Luis Campos wants him to renew his contract with PSG to extend his stay; however,  Messi remains silent, and the contexts around him turning more and more towards a return to the club he called home for 21 years.

"It would be possible financially because if he returned it would be as a free agent", said Romeu in an interview with Catalunya Ràdio. "It's a decision which has to be made by the coaching staff and the player. It doesn't correspond to me [to make those decisions], but it would be viable".

Messi's contract is set to expire at the end of the current season, and despite PSG's best efforts, the chances of him staying at the French capital are looking slimmer and slimmer. "He is an icon of the club. This will always be his home, but it will be a technical decision [if he returns]", added Romeu.

Its worth pointing out that the circunstances under which Messi left the club, with Barcelona unable to renew his contract even at a 50% discount (the most Spanish law allows). "We have completely changed the structure", explained Romeu, who worked with club president Joan Laporta in fixing the club's economy. "From having players with salary levels outside the market and an already large squad at the average age level, we have gone on to have players with projection and market level wages, which will surely be important".

"Without sounding presumptuous, we have saved Barça but we are not financially healthy and a lot of austerity and rigour are needed and there is a lot of work to do", pointed out Romeu, "Barça will be healthy in five years. In the 2024-25 season we will be at the level we belong".

The writing looks certainly on the wall for Lionel Messi to return to FC Barcelona as soon as he's allowed, which is by the end of the this current 2022-23 season. It would mark the return of the Argentine to the Blaugrana, where he scored 672 goals and assisted 303 times in 778 matches.
