One of the biggest moves in South American football's recent history has just collapsed. Luis Suárez is one of the continent's best players, but he hasn't played his club football in the land of fútbol since he left Uruguayan club Nacional in 2006 from Groningen in The Netherlands. It was looking like his comeback could be on and it seemed too good to be true... so it was.

According to several sources, Luis Suárez had everything agreed to join Argentina's River Plate, one of the biggest teams in the continent, with the objective of competing for the Copa Libertadores and staying fit for the Qatar 2022 World Cup. However, there was one condition: River had to overcome Velez Sarsfield in the Copa Libertadores Round of 16... and that did not happen.

Out-played for most of the 180 minutes of the series, River struggled to overcome their rivals, and their only goal would be ruled off in a controversial handball call made with the assistance of VAR. With the Millionario team out of the picture for South America's premiere competition, the dream of Suárez ends there.

"I was really tempted despite my plan to stay in Europe because River were pushing a lot to sign me, but the deal has collapsed as they're now out of the Copa Libertadores", Suárez told Uruguayan newspaper Ovación.

However, options are probably bound to open up now that the Uruguayan striker has to reconsider his future.
