It was between tears and sobs that Lionel Messi announced his farewell from FC Barcelona. After comings and goings and the entire world asking what the hell a "burofax" was, the Argentine had everything agreed to remain at the Camp Nou when it finally came about the fact that Barcelona could not keep him. Still, according to another Blaugrana legend it's not too late for the Argentinian to return home.

That legend is none other than Carles Puyol, who spent 10 years playing alongside Messi in Barcelona and saw him develop from a teenager into a superstar. The World Cup winner with Spain thinks a comeback could still be in the works and that the door would always be open for him if he wants to return to the Blaugranas.

"It's not too late for a Leo Messi return", explained Puyol in an interview with Goal, "He has one year left in his contract and many things can happen in that time. It depends on Xavi and Leo, but he will always be welcomed at Barça".

However, it's not like Barcelona is missing the Argentine a lot. Despite their economic troubles, the Blaugranas have been able to make a number of top signings, key among them Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, and Puyol is sopporting the new lead man in the Barça attack.

"He is one of the best strikers in the world, and not only because of his goalscoring capacities", the Spaniard commented, "He knows how to hold the ball, he knows how to play with his teammates...hopefully he can win the Ballon d'Or".

Asked if his former club can compete with Champions League winners Real Madrid with these signings, Carles Puyol looked hopeful. "I am convinced that Barcelona can fight one on one", he said, "They did a very good job and now it's up to Xavi, the players, and also the fans, to be all together, all as one. It's always easier that way, especially in difficult moments".
