Real Madrid needed a figure after Cristiano Ronaldo departed to Juventus in 2018, and Karim Benzema stepped into that role. The French striker, who was at one time lambasted for not scoring enough goals, is now definitely the best and most important players of Los Blancos. In a press conference before the match against Eintracht Frankfurt for the UEFA Supercup, Benzema spoke about his relationship with the Portuguese star, his present and his future.

"After Cristiano left, it is true that I have scored many more goals but with him I played another type of game, as a playmaker. He helped me a lot on and off the pitch, I knew I could give more and, when he left, I had to change my game and ambition", assured Benzema.

"The road [to UCL victory and the SuperCup] was very difficult and very good for us because each match was a battle. Today it's a dream that can be fulfilled tomorrow with a victory. It is a very important match. We come from a good preseason, we are ready and as European champions We are going to give everything to win the match and take the trophy to Madrid", the Frenchman told the press.

With his performances, Benzema became one of the favourites to win this year's Ballon d'Or, but he's not letting that dominate his mind: "I'm not the one to say if I'm the best or not. Every year I give my best at what for me is the best club in the world. My level has to go up every year, although last year was a very good season", he said, before adding, "The Ballon d'Or is not on my mind. Although every year, when I have the opportunity to win trophies I want do it, the first thing is the team. The individual thing comes later but the most important thing is to win things with the team".

When asked if he ever thought he'd take the place he now has within Real Madrid, he was very honest: "I didn't imagine it because I arrived at the age of 21 and what I had in my head was to win the Champions League, succeed and win trophies. Today, being the first captain, I feel very happy, proud of my work since I was little. I help my teammates to succeed , I score goals, I give assists and I want to give good things for all the fans".
