It came out of nowhere, but here we are. Argentinian manager Jorge Sampaoli and French club Olympique de Marseille have gone their separate ways. The OM was just coming from a great season under Sampaoli, where they ended second in the league, playing some great football, but that will be all.

Jorge Sampaoli will step down as Marseille manager

Despite never really challenging for the title, which was in PSG's hands for most of the season, Marseille and Sampaoli looked like a winning combo, with the team being at times of the most fun sides to watch at Ligue 1, and things were looking promising for the coming season.

However, it will all go to waste, as it had been reported by French journalist Mohamed Bouhafsi and then confirmed by Olympique de Marseille in an official statement that Sampaoli will be departing the club. "We would like to sincerely and warmly thank Jorge Sampaoli for his work", reads the statement by the club. "After 16 months of collaboration, this work has enabled the club to take a step forward in the construction of its new sporting project and to qualify directly for the Champions League".

The causal of the separation, according to many sources, is differences in the approach to team building for the future, with Sampaoli being allegedly angry at the club's decision not to further pursue the signing of Arsenal centreback William Saliba, who spent the last season at OM on loan.

William Saliba emerged as one of the Ligue 1's top centrebacks, and Sampaoli wanted him back

Now, Marseille will start the search for a new coach, with journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting that Hellas Verona manager Igor Tudor is the leading candidate for the job.
