He will not leave; the Barcelona president was that adamant. Despite the perpetual rumours and the well established fact that Barça has to sell to register and even afford any potential signings, Joan Laporta, the president of the club, was very clear when it comes to Frenkie de Jong.

During the presentation of Franck Kessie as the newest Blaugrana player, the president was asked about the situation of Frenkie de Jong, who has long been rumoured to be in the sights of Erik ten Hag and Manchester United, and for whom Barcelona was allegedly close to agreeing on terms. However, Laporta's words most have felt like a bucket of ice cold water for the Red Devils.

"Frenkie de Jong is Barcelona player - we don't want to sell him unless we have no other choice", explained Laporta. ""We know that he has offers. If at some point we are interested, we would consider it, but at this time, we are not selling the player".

This will undoubtedly be a setback for Manchester United, who have been swimming against the tide to close down the signing of the Dutch midfielder, despite clear signals from Barcelona that De Jong wasn't their favourite player to sell, and even veiled signs from the player, who has never looked all that fussed about a reunion with Ten Hag.

Frenkie de Jong arrived at Barcelona from Ajax in 2019, for a total of 85 million euros. Since then, the performances from the midfielder have been a mixed bag, but he remains commited to making it work at the Catalan city. The latest offer from Manchester United was reported to be of a total package of 85 million euros incluiding addons and bonuses, which was reportedly on the cusp of being accepted by Barcelona. With these words from Joan Laporta, it may be that time has expired for the Red Devils to make their best offer.
