Why do they call Hirving Lozano "Chucky"?
The Mexican star Hirving Lozano has one of the most interesting nicknames out there, but where does it come from?
Footballers have had some great nicknames over the years. From complex ones like the " Baby-Faced Assassin" Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to simple stuff like "King" Eric Cantona. Some, however, are very hard to explain, and amongs those we can find Hirving "Chucky" Lozano.
The Mexican star has become one of the most consistent performers for Napoli under Luciano Spaletti, but he bears a very unusual nickname, and one that can't simply be explained by his appearance or his performances with Gli Azzurri.
The history actually goes all the way back to Lozano's days as a young prospect in the academy of Mexican club Pachuca. According to the player's own telling of the story, it came up during the short time he lived at the Pachuca Academy with the rest of the players from his age group.
Lozano always enjoyed to pull pranks on his teammates, hiding some personal objetcs away, or hiding behind sofas or under beds to spook them when they fell sleep. With that, his teammates started calling him "Chucky", like the character from the famous terror film franchise, and the nickname has stuck with him ever since.
Much like his cinematographic counterpart, Hirving Lozano has been terrifying people, although he has switched from his young teammates to opposition defences, as he closed last season with six goals and six assists for Luciano Spaletti's Napoli, one of his best seasons since arriving in Italy in 2019.
